Published on 2010-09-28 by Harper Collins

Li'l Rabbit is not having a very good Kwanzaa. Granna Rabbit is sick, and so his family won't celebrate his favorite part of Kwanzaa this year: a big feast called Karamu. Li'l Rabbit knows what to do! He'll find Granna Rabbit a special treat for Karamu so she can celebrate anyway. He looks under a pile of logs, in the field, and in the pond and along the way meets Groundhog, Momma Field Mouse, and the frogs—but he doesn't find anything for Granna Rabbit. Maybe I'm just too little to help Granna Rabbit celebrate Kwanzaa, Li'l Rabbit thinks. Or maybe he just needs a little help from his family and friends. Inspired by Brer Rabbit, a trickster character from the African-American folklore tradition, the story of Li'l Rabbit captures the true meaning of Kwanzaa—coming together to help others.

By:"Ruth McKoy Lowery"
Published on 2000 by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated

Issues of immigration remain fresh in the minds of many Americans whose lives are impacted in some form or other. Schooling is a public space where this impact is most often inevitable. Literature is one medium in which children are given a representational view of immigrants' lived experiences. This representation may or may not be positive. This book analyzes how forms of representations are presented in seventeen children's literature novels, looking particularly at how issues of race and class affect, or influence, these representations.

Published on 2018-05-03 by GRIN Verlag

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Sociology - Children and Youth, grade: 1, Egerton University, language: English, abstract: Immigration has emerged as a serious social issue in different regions of the world. For instance, immigration into the US has raised immense concerns due to the threat of terrorism. This has led to policy responses that aim at enhancing homeland security. On the other hand, immigration comes with its share of economic implications, racial discrimination, and juvenile delinquencies. Of great concern are the effects of immigration on children. Children are considered to be prone to the negative consequences arising from immigration, which is attributable to their dependency nature and challenges in adapting to family dynamics, especially in diverse cultural settings. It is implicit that immigration has taken diverse trends, which are not consistent with the traditional social theories such as the straight-line assimilation. As such, there is need to investigate this aspect from an advanced perspective. Evidence indicates that one in every five children in the US is either a second-generation immigrant or an immigrant child. This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the effects of immigration on children.

Book Saving Face PDF Free

By:"Angie Y. Chung"
Published on 2016-09-20 by Rutgers University Press

Tiger Mom. Asian patriarchy. Model minority children. Generation gap. The many images used to describe the prototypical Asian family have given rise to two versions of the Asian immigrant family myth. The first celebrates Asian families for upholding the traditional heteronormative ideal of the “normal (white) American family” based on a hard-working male breadwinner and a devoted wife and mother who raises obedient children. The other demonizes Asian families around these very same cultural values by highlighting the dangers of excessive parenting, oppressive hierarchies, and emotionless pragmatism in Asian cultures. Saving Face cuts through these myths, offering a more nuanced portrait of Asian immigrant families in a changing world as recalled by the people who lived them first-hand: the grown children of Chinese and Korean immigrants. Drawing on extensive interviews, sociologist Angie Y. Chung examines how these second-generation children negotiate the complex and conflicted feelings they have toward their family responsibilities and upbringing. Although they know little about their parents’ lives, she reveals how Korean and Chinese Americans assemble fragments of their childhood memories, kinship narratives, and racial myths to make sense of their family experiences. However, Chung also finds that these adaptive strategies come at a considerable social and psychological cost and do less to reconcile the social stresses that minority immigrant families endure today. Saving Face not only gives readers a new appreciation for the often painful generation gap between immigrants and their children, it also reveals the love, empathy, and communication strategies families use to help bridge those rifts.

Published on 2016-05-23 by Routledge

Focusing on the socialization of the human use of other animals as resources in contemporary Western society, this book explores the cultural reproduction of human-nonhuman animal relations in childhood. With close attention to the dominant practices through which children encounter animals and mainstream representations of animals in children's culture - whether in terms of the selective exposure of children to animals as pets or as food in the home or in school, or the representation of animals in mass media and social media - Our Children and Other Animals reveals the interconnectedness of studies of childhood, culture and human-animal relations. In doing so it establishes the importance of human-animal relations in sociology, by describing the sociological importance of animals in children's lives and children in animals’ lives. Presenting a new typology of the various kinds of human-animal relationship, this conceptually innovative book constitutes a clear demonstration of the relevance of sociology to the interdisciplinary field of human-animal relations and will appeal to readers across the social sciences with interests in sociology, childhood studies, cultural and media studies and human-animal interaction.

Book CHILDREN'S STORIES FROM ZANZIBAR - 10 Children's Stories from Africa's Spice Islands PDF Free

Download CHILDREN'S STORIES FROM ZANZIBAR - 10 Children's Stories from Africa's Spice Islands PDF Books
By:"Anon E. Mouse"
Published on 2017-07-10 by Abela Publishing Ltd

Herein you will find 10 tales from the tiny island archipelago of Zanzibar - “The Spice Islands” of old. Stories like “The Kites and the Crows” – which tells why African Kites always fly away from Crows. The story of “The Ape, The Snake, And The Lion” which tells of poor ’Mvoo Laana, Neeo’ka the snake and Sim’ba the lion, and how ‘Mvoo gains riches for sparing the snake’s life teaching him the lessons of trust, kindness and loyalty. You will also find the stories of “Goso, the Teacher”, “Haamdaanee”, “The Magician and the Sultan’s Son” and many more. But why should such a small island have such a rich heritage of folklore? As far back as the 3rd C. Zanzibar was known to the Greeks and Romans. Later it was used by the Persians, Arabs, and Indians for trade and as a base for voyages between the Middle East, India, and Africa. Vasco da Gama's visit in 1498 marked the beginning of European influence. In 1698, Zanzibar fell under the control of the Sultanate of Oman and in the 1830’s Said bin Sultan moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar. In the 1800’s the Sultanate consolidated power around Ivory and the East African slave trade. In the mid-19th century as many as 50,000, mainly Negro, slaves passed annually through the port enroute to Arabia, Asia, Europe and the USA. The Zanzibar slave trade was finally abolished in 1873. After gaining independence from Britain in 1964, Zanzibar merged with mainland Tanganyika to form the modern nation of Tanzania. So, it is not surprising that this small island archipelago, just off the coast of Africa, should have such a rich and varied tapestry of culture and folklore. Herein you will find 10 tales from the tiny island archipelago of Zanzibar - “The Spice Islands” of old. Stories like “The Kites and the Crows”, “The Ape, The Snake, And The Lion”, “Goso, the Teacher”, “Haamdaanee”, “The Magician and the Sultan’s Son” and many more. 33% of the net profit will be donated to SENTEBALE – a charity supporting children in Lesotho orphaned by AIDS.

The Monkey King: A Classic Chinese Tale for Children is inspired by Chinese folktales and legends about Monkey, King of the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, Great Sage Equal to Heaven. But his friends just call him Monkey! Hilariously mischievous and full of energy, Monkey has uniquely incredible magical powers. Long ago, the Jade Emperor, the ruler of the Heavens, was so unhappy that China was in great turmoil that he even considered destroying its people. The Goddess of Mercy, Guan Yin, suggested another way—find Lord Buddha's scriptures in India and bring them back to China—this would help the Chinese to become peaceful and kind. This Chinese children's story is about the beginnings of this epic journey, and how Monkey, Pigsy, and Sandy join this quest.

By:"Gustav Jahoda","Ioan Lewis"
Published on 2015-03-27 by Psychology Press

Until the 70s and 80s anthropologists studying different cultures had mainly confined themselves to the behaviour and idea systems of adults. Psychologists, on the other hand, working mainly in Europe and America, had studied child development in their own settings and simply assumed the universality of their findings. Thus both disciplines had largely ignored a crucial problem area: the way in which children from birth onwards learn to become competent members of their culture. This process, which has been called ‘the quintessential human adaptation’, constitutes the theme of this volume, originally published in 1988. It derives from a workshop held at the London School of Economics which brought together fieldworkers who in their studies had paid more than usual attention to children in their cultures. Their experience and foci of interest were varied but this very diversity serves to illuminate different facets of the acquisition of culture by children, ranging in age from pre-verbal infants to adolescents. Evolutionarily primed for culture-learning, children are responsive to a rich web of influences from subtle and indirect as in their music and dance to direct teaching in the family guided by culture-specific ideas about child psychology. Some of the salient things they learn relate to gender, status and power, critical for the functioning of all societies. The introductory essay provides the necessary historical background of the development of child study in both anthropology and psychology and outlined how future research in the ethnography of childhood should proceed. The book concludes with an annotated bibliography providing a guide to the literature from 1970 onwards.
